I guess that I look at patriotism in a totally different light than do most people, but my idea of what it is may provide you with an interesting perspective, or at the least give you some understanding of the way I think.

     For me, supporting a government and patriotism are two completely separate concepts. In my mind, true patriots are simply those who support and help their neighbors, limited only by the size of the locale which they decide to consider their neighborhood. Most simply call this being a good neighbor, or a good person, but I see no real difference between being a good neighbor and a good patriot.

     Those who support a government at the expense of their neighbors are not patriots. They are government lackeys. That being said, it is possible in certain circumstances to support both the government and your neighbors, but only if that support is mutually beneficial.
